This is an inflammation of the mammary glands, often occurring 3-4 weeks after delivery. It is a very common condition, resulting from an obstructed mammary duct and is accompanied by a bacterial infection. There may be distention of the breast, swelling, redness on the surface, and fever. As the condition progresses, the symptoms may worsen and the patient may have chills, fever, increase in white blood cell count , swollen and painful lymph glands in the armpits, pus and ulceration of breast. It is important to keep the affected breast clean.

Avoid: spicy, stimulating foods, coffee, smoking, alcohol, dairy products (especially if there is pus), breast feeding.
